Another woven story - or - another heavily modified Sew diy Lou Box Top

Today I celebrate a whole month of weekly posting!
What's better to talk about than cat stuff, right?

I really hope I can keep up with this pace of posting regularly even though work is flooding me as well - and on top of that I am tired as f***, because my thyroid medication is not strong enough. Still two weeks until my doctor's appointment and new prescription.
Due to that and other stuff I have not been very active on insta and that is fine. I'm sorry tho about posts I missed, sadly that's just how it works on that damn platform. You know, new content is all you ever see. Makes me think once again about blogs - I can read those later easily and often blogs are not as shallow as many IG accounts. But I get it, most people prefer to just look at a pretty picture for a few seconds. Fine.

So, I am still looking for a better social media network. I have been exploring reddit for some time now, and I quite enjoy it. But since there's currently just one sewing subreddit there's not much alt stuff there and the few posts are kind of drowned by all the other stuff.
Naturally I have thought about starting my own subreddit for us "alternative" sewists. Not just for goths, also not just for black clothes - obviously! Just a tiny bit more focused on let's call it "unusual" fashion. Could that be a thing? Do you use reddit or would be willing to try/start using it? Will the interested sewist please stand up?

Ok, I know I promised cat stuff. Here's a picture of Elli:

In case you somehow haven't heard yet: I have a thing for cats. And cat fabrics - I just can't resist. I bought this cat fabric at a local store maybe two or three years ago. It was labelled as fabric for blouses - so obviously it's woven - as far as I remember mostly or only cotton, very thin and drapey, but not see-through at all. It's perfect! So why the hell did I buy only a meter of it??

See, this is the problem with having fabric shopping as a separate hobby - or addiction in some cases. You just buy pretty things without further thinking. I saw this cat fabric and needed to have it - but I had absolutely no idea what I would do with it, so I kind of randomly took a meter. And of course now I would like to make more clothes out of it - but guess what, it's not available anymore. Aaargh!
I do have the solution: Using up my (small, thank glob) stash and then buying for a planned project only. Or at least almost only. After over a year this still works pretty good for me: I did buy some fake leather and a bit of other stuff last summer - with projects in my head for each and every one - and two weeks ago I saw that my local store had the perfect thick plaid knit for the pants I've dreamed of since 2009, so I rushed there and bought the rest of it - almost 2 meters. That's it for the last 12 months. Unless I forgot something, which sadly happens way too often. Gladly I can't be upset about something I have no memory of, hehe!

This is the reason I started to write everything down immediately when planning and making new stuff. Because as I tend to show you the things months or years later (I need to be honest to myself here, I have no idea if and when this is about to change) I just do not remember.

Casual transition to this old project:
Maybe you already guessed it - this top is a rather old make. I sewed it short time after the top with the flowers, which I just showed you a few weeks ago:

These two tops are basically the same. So this one with the cats is also based on the Lou Box Top from Sew diy. I think I made this one a little bit longer, like 2cm? But since the fabric is way more drapey than the violet flower fabric, the cat top has more flow and doesn't stand off so weird. It's still a bit too short, so when worn with regular jeans it's more exposing than I like. But it's simply perfect for waist skirts or pants with higher rise and I've worn it a lot last summer since it's so nice and cool.

Aaand that's already all I can say about this old thing. Since this week's post was more ranting than talking about actual sewing, I hope you still had fun. Here are a few more shots for your pleasure, see ya next time!

  1. Cats—and cat fabrics—are the best! I am also trying to keep my fabric shopping in check... I don’t have any more room to store anything! The top is simply adorable 😍

    1. Thank you so much! Yeah, on one hand not having "enough" space drives me mad, but it has the big advantage of helping with spending less. Honestly, we just don't need so much fabric we can't ever use it. Fabric shopping is fun, but also expensive and unnecessary.
